Život je krátky (Life is short) is a book from the Slovak fiction writer Lucia Piussi, which I have redesigned as part of the RE-BOOK project. RE-BOOK arised as a cooperation between Studio 305 of the Department of Visual Communication of VŠVU (AFAD - Academy of Fine Arts and Design) in Bratislava and O.Z. ars_litera, the main organiser of Slovakia's most prestigious literary prize for original prose - Anasoft Litera.
The task was to redesign a book chosen from 10 nominees for the prize. Besides the book cover, our redesign should also involve the book format and inner type area. During the book cover creation I have flirted with a rebel expression and black on black contrast, which is supplemented with inspirations by samizdats (forbidden self-publishing during socialism). I ignored the book spine and created instead on the fore-edge my own lettering realised with screen-printing technique. The sign “Stoke, našej matke…” (dedicated to Stoka, our mother…) expressed a quotation by the book author.
The book was printed digitally on Munken Pure paper with hand sewn binding.
